What neither Angus, Akila nor Marge had noticed, however, was that something rather alarming had happened between Hattie saying ‘one’ and the crucial ‘zero’. And the rather alarming thing that had happened was this:

Evil Emperor Kragg’s robot arm, you see, wasn’t just a laser cannon. It had several different functions, not unlike one of those very elaborate penknives that people take camping with them. It was a corkscrew, a toothpick, a wireless speaker (even evil emperors need to relax with a few tunes every now and then) and also – and this is the relevant part here – a hugely powerful telescopic grabbing tool. Before the trolley had a chance to vanish back into the time void, the end of the robot arm shot out in a flash and fastened itself firmly to the handle of the trolley. With his other arm, Kragg grabbed his oily sidekick and, together, they were dragged along after the trolley as it disappeared with a whoosh into the past.

‘Guidance systems restored,’ said Hattie as the trolley careered backwards through the void. ‘Returning to the Age of the Idiot.’

‘Sorry,’ said Angus above the roaring of the wind. ‘Excuse me please, sorry, didn’t quite catch that. The age of the what?’
